Clear the clutter with Acadia 7.1
Simple, easy to use instructions lead to better outcomes.
Five basic steps can be the difference between a successful medical procedure and a fatal infection according to work done by Dr. Peter Pronovost at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Pronovost’s approach for physicians and nurses to use check lists to solve chronic healthcare delivery problems is having a huge impact on the quality and safety of patient care across the US.
A study of ICUs in the state of Michigan found that implementation of a simple checklist reduced the rate of infection from 2.7 infections per 1,000 catheter-days to 0. A follow up study found that this improvement in infection rates was sustainable for a period of 3 years after the initial study, simply by requiring strict-adherence to this simple check list.
The most impressive thing about these findings is the simplicity of the checklist. Here are the five steps:
- Wash hands with soap
- Clean the patient’s skin with chlorhexidine antiseptic
- Cover the patient’s entire body with sterile drapes
- Wear a mask, hat, sterile gown, and gloves
- Put sterile dressing over the insertion site after the line is in
The list is simple, direct, and intuitive even to those whose only exposure to an ICU is via their favorite TV drama series.
So, what does this have to do with Acadia and the new features in the 7.1 release? First, the list is perfectly-constructed to use clear and concise language, in an active voice, with nothing distracting you from the task at hand. Also, there may be additional details that support each of these steps, but they’re kept out of the way and don’t interfere with the fundamentals of infection control.
We’ve taken this concept to heart with a subtle but powerful change to our procedure document template. Beginning with 7.1, procedure document viewers will be able to expand or collapse the procedure step details with a simple click.
Content creators will also be able to specify if step details should be hidden by default. To hide the step details, simply click the “Collapse Details” checkbox beneath the step title while editing your procedure document.
This is helpful to ensure sustained adoption of your procedure among your most experienced employees while providing additional detail to those unfamiliar with the process.
Additionally, we’ve allowed you to link directly to specific collections in Acadia. This feature is helpful for bookmarking the content you use most frequently, or sharing a link to a specific collection on your corporate intranet.
The quickest way to link to your collection is to navigate to your home screen, right-click on the collection in question, and copy the URL.
This link can be pasted anywhere to provide access directly to the content in the specified collection.
Behind the scenes, we’ve made numerous enhancements to better-support our international and enterprise customers.
